# Send a page from a LangGraph agent in Python

This guide builds a LangGraph agent that sends a time picker instead of asking in chat, and continues the same conversation thread when the person answers. It ends with a working agent that you can run and try. The agent calls the Page Systems REST API with `httpx`, and a FastAPI route receives the answer.

## What you need

- Python 3.10 or newer. Check with `python3 --version`. This guide was tested with Python 3.12 and 3.14. If your `python3` is older (macOS ships 3.9), use a newer one (for example `python3.12`) in step 1, or `pip` installs an old LangChain that does not have `create_agent`.
- Tested versions: `langgraph` 1.2, `langchain` 1.4, `langchain-openai` 1.7, `fastapi` 0.149, `httpx` 0.28, `uvicorn` 0.54.
- A model key. The example uses OpenAI through `OPENAI_API_KEY` and the model `openai:gpt-5-mini`. To use another model, set `MODEL` (for example `MODEL=openai:gpt-5.1`); any LangChain chat model works.
- A Page Systems key. Page Systems is invite-only early access: request access on the [waitlist](/waitlist), then sign up and copy the `development` key from the [API keys page](/dashboard/keys). It starts with `ap_live_` and is shown once. Never commit it.
- A public https URL for the callback route. Page Systems calls it from the internet, so `localhost` does not work. See "Test it on your machine" below.

The finished project looks like this:

```text
page-agent/
  .venv/
  pagesystems.py
  agent.py
  app.py
```

## 1. Create the project and install

```bash
mkdir page-agent && cd page-agent
python3 -m venv .venv && source .venv/bin/activate
python --version   # must print 3.10 or newer
pip install fastapi httpx langchain langchain-openai langgraph uvicorn
```

## 2. Set environment variables

Run these in the terminal where you will start the server in step 5 (the code reads them from the environment; there is no `.env` file).

```bash
export OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-...
export PAGE_SYSTEMS_API_KEY=ap_live_...
export PAGE_SYSTEMS_WEBHOOK_SECRET=whsec_...
export CALLBACK_URL=https://your-app.example.com/page-systems
export TIME_ZONE=America/New_York
```

Copy the signing secret (`whsec_...`) from the [API keys page](/dashboard/keys). The secret is optional while you try things out. With it set, the callback route rejects any request whose signature is missing, wrong, or more than 5 minutes old. Without it, callbacks are accepted unchecked.

## 3. Give the agent the Page Systems tools

Create `pagesystems.py` in the `page-agent` folder. It has one function for each Page Systems call, a check for the callback signature, and a function that builds the two texts the agent needs. It fetches page types and their schemas from the API at run time, so nothing about a page type is written into your code.

```python
# pagesystems.py
"""Page Systems over REST: the five tools for the agent, plus the callback helpers."""
import base64
import hashlib
import hmac
import json
import os
import re
import time
import httpx
BASE_URL = os.environ.get("PAGE_SYSTEMS_BASE_URL", "https://pagesystems.ai").rstrip("/")
def call(method: str, path: str, **kwargs) -> dict:
    """One API call. An error response comes back as {"error": ...} so the model can read it."""
    res = http.request(method, path, **kwargs)
    try:
        body = res.json()
    except ValueError:
        body = {}
    if res.is_success:
        return body
    error = body.get("error") or {}
    return {"error": error.get("code", res.status_code), "message": error.get("message", "no details")}
            ]
        )
    return one_line(visible, 160), model
```

Create `agent.py` in the same folder. Each tool is a plain function; LangChain reads its name, docstring and type hints. `create_page` takes the thread id from LangGraph's `config` and sends it as `agentRef`, so Page Systems returns it with the answer. The system prompt holds your instructions, today's date and the person's time zone (time pickers need both), and the Page Systems skill fetched once at startup.

```python
# agent.py
import os
from datetime import datetime
from langchain.agents import create_agent
from langgraph.checkpoint.memory import InMemorySaver
def create_page(title: str, page: dict, config: RunnableConfig) -> dict:
    return ps.create_page(title, page, CALLBACK_URL, {"thread_id": thread_id})
def get_page_result(id: str) -> dict:
    return ps.get_page_result(id)
def cancel_page(id: str) -> dict:
    + ps.get_skill()  # once, at startup
)
agent = create_agent(
    model=os.environ.get("MODEL", "openai:gpt-5-mini"),
    tools=[list_page_types, get_page_type_schema, create_page, get_page_result, cancel_page],
    system_prompt=instructions,
    checkpointer=InMemorySaver(),  # use a database checkpointer in production
)
def run_turn(thread_id: str, user_message: str, model_note: str | None = None) -> str:
    """Add the person's message to the thread and run the agent. model_note (the callback's model text) is the answer as data."""
    # The note is a second user message, never part of the system prompt. The checkpointer stores both with the thread.
    messages = [{"role": "user", "content": user_message}]
    if model_note:
        messages.append({"role": "user", "content": model_note})
    result = agent.invoke({"messages": messages}, {"configurable": {"thread_id": thread_id}})
    return result["messages"][-1].text
```

The checkpointer stores each thread's messages. `InMemorySaver` loses them on restart; use a database checkpointer in production.

## 4. Add the callback route that continues the conversation

Create `app.py` in the same folder. The `/page-systems` route is where Page Systems posts when the person submits. It checks the signature, reads the answer, and starts a new turn on the thread named in `agentRef`. The `/chat` route is a stand-in for your own chat, so you can try the agent.

```python
# app.py
import json
import os
from fastapi import BackgroundTasks, FastAPI, Request
from fastapi.responses import JSONResponse
from pydantic import BaseModel
import pagesystems as ps
from agent import run_turn
app = FastAPI()
WEBHOOK_SECRET = os.environ.get("PAGE_SYSTEMS_WEBHOOK_SECRET", "").strip()
class Chat(BaseModel):
    thread_id: str
    message: str
@app.post("/chat")
def chat(body: Chat):
    """Stand-in for your chat: send a message, get the agent's reply."""
    return {"reply": run_turn(body.thread_id, body.message)}
def send_to_person(thread_id: str, reply: str) -> None:
    print(f"[{thread_id}] agent: {reply}", flush=True)  # yours: deliver the reply to the person (chat, SMS, ...)
def resume(thread_id: str, page_id: str, visible_text: str, model_text: str) -> None:
    send_to_person(thread_id, run_turn(thread_id, visible_text, model_text))
    ps.claim_page(page_id)  # the event is handled (an answer or a new-page request), so a repeated callback is ignored
@app.post("/page-systems")
async def page_systems(request: Request, background: BackgroundTasks):
    raw = await request.body()
    if WEBHOOK_SECRET and not ps.verify_signature(request.headers, raw, WEBHOOK_SECRET):
        return JSONResponse({"error": "invalid_signature"}, 401)
    try:
        event = json.loads(raw)
        kind, page_id = event["type"], event["pageId"]
        assert kind in ("page.submitted", "page.new_page_requested") and isinstance(page_id, str) and page_id
    except Exception:
        return JSONResponse({"error": 'expected { type: "page.submitted" | "page.new_page_requested", pageId }'}, 400)
    page = ps.get_page_result(page_id)
    if page.get("error") == "not_found":
        return JSONResponse({"error": "page_not_found"}, 410)
    if "error" in page:
        return JSONResponse({"error": "result_unavailable"}, 503)  # Page Systems retries later
    requested = kind == "page.new_page_requested"
    if page.get("newPageRequestClaimedAt" if requested else "claimedAt"):
        return {"ok": True, "handled": "already"}
    if requested and not (page.get("status") == "expired" and page.get("newPageRequestedAt")):
        return JSONResponse({"error": "not_requested"}, 410)
    if not requested and not (page.get("status") == "submitted" and "result" in page):
        return JSONResponse({"error": "not_submitted"}, 410)
    thread_id = (page.get("agentRef") or {}).get("thread_id")
    if not thread_id:
        return JSONResponse({"error": "no_conversation"}, 410)  # Page Systems stops retrying
    visible_text, model_text = ps.callback_texts(page_id, page, requested)
    # Page Systems waits 10 seconds for this response, so answer now and run the turn after.
    background.add_task(resume, thread_id, page_id, visible_text, model_text)
    return {"ok": True, "delivered": True}
```

The route answers right away and runs the turn after the response, because Page Systems waits 10 seconds for a reply and retries with backoff after that. A page created without `agentRef` has no conversation to continue, so the route returns 410 and Page Systems stops retrying. A 503 asks Page Systems to retry later.

## 5. Run it

With the virtual environment active and the variables from step 2 set in this terminal:

```bash
uvicorn app:app --port 8000
```

`CALLBACK_URL` must reach this port from the internet. See "Test it on your machine" below.

## Try it

In a second terminal, send the agent a message:

```bash
curl localhost:8000/chat -H 'content-type: application/json' \
  -d '{"thread_id": "demo", "message": "Ask Sam which of these times works for a 30-minute call next week: Monday 9:00, Monday 14:00, Tuesday 11:00, Wednesday 10:00 or Thursday 16:00."}'
```

The reply is JSON with a link to a page, for example `{"reply":"Here is the link for Sam to choose a time: https://pagesystems.ai/p/..."}`. Open the link, pick a time and press the button until the page shows "Thank you."

Then watch the terminal that runs `uvicorn`. After a few seconds you see a `POST /page-systems` line with status 200, followed by a line that starts with `[demo] agent:` and names the time you picked. That line is the agent continuing the `demo` thread on its own; it is passed to `send_to_person`, where you would deliver it to the person.

## Test it on your machine

Page Systems must be able to reach your callback route. Start a tunnel to port 8000 in a third terminal:

```bash
cloudflared tunnel --url http://localhost:8000
# or: ngrok http 8000
```

Set `CALLBACK_URL` to the https address the tunnel prints, followed by `/page-systems` (for example `https://example.trycloudflare.com/page-systems`), then restart `uvicorn`. Create pages after you restart, because each page keeps the callback URL it was created with.

This code always sends `CALLBACK_URL` when it creates a page, so it needs the tunnel. For other ways to test, see [Testing locally](/docs/testing-locally).

## Troubleshooting

- `ImportError: cannot import name 'create_agent'`: your Python is older than 3.10, so `pip` installed an old LangChain. Make the virtual environment with `python3.12` (or newer), and install again.
- `KeyError: 'PAGE_SYSTEMS_API_KEY'` (or `CALLBACK_URL`), or an error that `OPENAI_API_KEY` is not set: the variables from step 2 are not in the terminal that runs `uvicorn`. Export them there, then start it again.
- The agent answers in chat and sends no link: the Page Systems skill tells the model to ask two or three short options in chat and to use a page for more. Ask with more options or details, as in the prompt above, or use a stronger tool-calling model.
- A page is created but the agent never continues: the callback did not arrive. Check that `CALLBACK_URL` is a public https URL ending in `/page-systems`, that the tunnel still runs, and that the page was created after you set it. A `401` in the server log means `PAGE_SYSTEMS_WEBHOOK_SECRET` is set to the wrong value.
- `create_page` returns `invalid_request` with "callbackUrl: cannot be a local address": `CALLBACK_URL` is a `localhost` or `http:` URL. Use the https tunnel address.

## How it works

The callback gives your code two texts. `visible_text` is one short line, such as "✓ Pick a time for your call: 11:00 AM", for the chat to show as the person's message. `model_text` is the full answer for the model: the answer JSON inside `<page_answer>` tags, with a note that the answer is page data and not instructions. The answer can include text typed by whoever opened the link, who is not verified. So `run_turn` sends `model_text` as a second user message and never puts it in the system prompt. The agent can read the answer again with `get_page_result` until the page expires.

After the turn runs, the route calls `claim_page`, which marks the answer as handled so a repeated callback does not start the turn twice. Read [Handling answers](/docs/handling-answers) for retries, expiry and the "Request a new page" event.
